Folk Song

Does anyone know the name or lyrics of the Swedish folk song Ingrid Bergman sang in the Bells of St. Mary's?

reply

She mentioned something about the song being about spring.

The name of the song is "Varvindar Friska" (Spring Breezes). It's a traditional Swedish folk song for Walpurgisnight, which marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring.

In the novelization by George Victor Martin it's spelled 'Vorvindar', and here are the lyrics as copied from the novelization:

Vorvindar friska
Laka och hviska
Lunderna oh Likt
Alskander par.
Strommarne ila
Finna ej hvila.

(Spring breezes fresh
Play and whisper
Round the elms like
A pair of lovers.
The streams rush,
Finding no rest
Until they reach
The raging sea.

Beat, O my heart,
Complain and listen.
The sound of the shepherd's horn
Dies mid the crags.
Neptune plays,
Sorrows are shared,
No rest among hills and dales.)

Sister Benedict later tells Father O'Malley the title is "Spring is Here".

It's a little amusing to think of a nun singing these lyrics:

The sound of the shepherd's horn
Dies mid the crags.
Neptune plays,
Sorrows are shared,
No rest among hills and dales.

Still, I suppose there' s a link with another potential nun singing of hills being alive with sounds of music!
