Thank You, Family Guy...

for putting this segment in your show. Some people will always look at you as a sporadic comedy, but in terms of being smart, this one by far takes the cake...

Maybe I'm not clear on the definition, but how is taking an entire scene from Anchors Aweigh and superimposing Stewie's character in place of Jerry "smart." I see it as lazy comedy and a cheap way to fill in 5 minutes of an episode.

reply

I disagree I think it was kind of a little tribute to Gene. And with that scene in that episode it's going to spark some new fans to check out his movies. For example Family Guy made fun at the That Girl intro and before that episode I never heard of that show and then I looked into and now I'm a fan of the show. That clip might make some new fans so I think it's wonderful that Family Guy is introducing Gene to new people. The clip wasn't done in a bad way either.

Tribute or not, I still cannot see how it is "smart." I do enjoy how Family Guy will allow for some other people to seek out less-known television shows and movies to possibly broaden their horizon, I'm not saying you're wrong there. All I'm saying is that all the scene had was a completely unaltered (save for Stewie superimposed over Jerry) 5-minute scene from Anchors Aweigh. That requires no creativity or comedic skill whatsoever and just seems like filler. It's almost akin to them saying "Hey, we're going to end our show 5 minutes early. Go check out Anchors Aweigh with Gene Kelly."

I'm not trying to be mean or poke fun, I guess I just have a different interpretation of "smart."

I kinda disagree with you but I do see and value your point.

@blondee661 Just to back up your point - it was Family Guy's clip that brought me to Anchors Aweigh - and I enjoyed it so much I intend to add the DVD to my collection. They don't make them like this any more!

agreed... especially since stewie is a complete rip-off of jimmy corrigan and fox helped mcfarlane bury all the legal issues:

But Stewie was created in 1998 and Jimmy Corrigan was created in 2000.

reply

jimmy corrigan has been being drawn since 1991; you must be referring to the graphic novel that came out in 2000.

no worries.

Mhm. Then someone needs to update the Wikipedia entry..

But yes, *beep* Family Guy. And *beep* every person named Seth who ever had anything to do with its production.
