anchors aweigh vs. On the town

Which does everybody enjoy more? Personally I really enjoyed anchors aweigh a lot more. The music and dancing I found a lot more enjoyable in On the town, but the story for Anchors aweigh I thought was much much better.

reply

anchors aweigh 100%. I loved it.

reply

Yes I have to say I preffered Anchors Aweigh, although the whole reason i decided to watch anchors aweigh is because I enjoyed On The Town so much

I have to go with "On the Town." It's one of my absolute favorites and the tunes are so catchy. But I love "Anchors Aweigh," too -- actually anything in which I get to see Gene dance!

Interesting thread, because I thought that On the Town was much better. The story moved faster, had more funny scenes, and memorable songs (i.e You're Aweful) than Anchors Aweigh did.

I completely agree. On the Town is tighter, has better pacing, and has much stonger characters. It is actually one of my favorite musicals.

And On the Town also has Jules Munshin.

Anchors Aweigh for Me.

I agree with people that On the Town probably has stronger dance numbers overall (and I love that it was filmed on location in NY) but Anchors Aweigh just had the better story for me.

I think I liked that it was just Frank and Gene (nothing against Jules Munshin I just thought there was better focus with 2 main characters instead of 3). I also liked the romances better in this one.

I definitely prefer Anchors Aweigh. On the Town is way too silly (the ol' "guys in drag" routine? really?), the music is awful awful AWFUL (excepting the few Bernstein songs that were left on the soundtrack), and Jules Munshin is one of the most annoying actors ever committed to film. Anchors Aweigh is fun, colorful, a great feel-good musical, even if a bit overlong.

It´s difficult, because I consider "On the Town" to be my all-time favorite musical. Maybe it was just about the time I first watched it, but I really feel better and happier after watching this movie.
Anyway, Sinatra and Kelly are just wonderful together. They´re great also in "Take me out to the ballgame" singing the main song and with Jules Munshin again, in the sequence "O´Brien to Ryan to Goldberg". I just can´t get tired of these guys!

reply

I loved all three of the Kelly/Sinatra films. I guess Anchors Aweigh is my favorite. On the Town would be my least to be honest.

reply

'on the town' definately for me. cannot stand ann miller but still think it's a better overall film, with better songs.

reply

On The Town - More enjoyable storyline and pacing along with the characters. What a great bunch they were!

reply

Anchors Aweigh, if only for the live-animation sequence.

reply

as the "town" trailer claims, "it's twice as gay as anchors aweigh!"

Come on, folks. Really. "On the Town" is a near-masterpiece; a
rollicking, highly inventive classic that moved the musical forward.
AA is cute, with some great numbers, but it has no business being two
hours and twenty minutes long (!). Truly ridiculous. Even "Take Me Out
to the Ballgame" is much sharper than the lumpy AA.

On the Town is better, but Anchors Aweigh is first-rate itself. The story is slight, but the direction, performances and songs are great and it's such a joy to see this movie on th big screen. That's where it really comes to life. But all three Kelly/Sinatra films are splendid.

NOW TARZAN MAKE WAR!

Agree. In fact, AA is the only one of the three Kelly/Sinatra films I've
seen on the big screen, and it was a great experience. The art direction
and Technicolor are gorgeous, as are the numbers. But, oh - did this
film need some major EDITING.

It's definitely 'On the Town' for me.
