I know this is melodrama, think Casablanca as a comedy, but I love it. The nightclub scene is Gable and Garson at their finest. I still belly-laugh at;

"Get into the tub Emily."

It's like he knows she is above all his shenanigans but uses that to his advantage.

Yours is possibly the best comment posted on this most curious film.
Apart from the difficult to swallow change of personality for Ms Garsons character (I put this down to too many writers being used for the screen play)
I found it a very serious study of 'lost souls' on an 'Adventure' through their own floundering lives.

The Novel seems to have been quite philosophical, maybe too much so for a Hollywood film of this time. Much of the dialogue, throughout the film, is very profound indeed. The Dr's summery of the human condition at the very end is most powerful(they should have bitten the bullet and taken it seriously all the way!) This, and superb production values, coupled with a strong cast, make it well worth giving it a another look.

The review of this fine film, on the main page(while partly right)is unworthy.
