Why is this movie not more appreciated?

This movie is outstanding yet it was seldom seen for years, not regarded as a classic, most people have never seen it and there is no DVD available?

reply

dude, many people love it and talk about it all over IMDB and other places.

and the DVD just came out 2 weeks ago.

reply

It's been lovingly remembered and now with its long overdue DVD release, is being re-discovered by those who haven't seen it before.

It must be regarded as a classic, it was on TCM tonight. But the dumb ending may have kept the word-of-mouth from spreading...

I guess the ending was good enough for Dickens, "The Wizard of Oz" and a few lesser episodes of the classic "Twilight Zone". Even so I couldn't help thinking about the one way they say you should never end a story.

What's 'the one way they say you should never end a story'? Like this one?
I haven't heard that advice but I don't doubt someone has said it...

There are a number of articles about creative writing that list "it is only a dream" as the worst p possible way to end a story. It was done to death in the past and any boob can do it. You don't have fire your gray mater much when you can have your character escape a impossible situation by simply waking up. Worst of all the audience or readers feels like they've just been jerked around. They've invested sometime into finding out if character is going survive great adversities and it turns out none of the adversities really happened. Bummer!!!!

"The Women in the window is one of the few film noirs I haven't seen before so I didn't expect the awakening at the end. My reaction was to brake into laughter. Seriously I actually fell for this old con.

I sort of think Fritz Lang used this ending as a protest against censorship. Bad censorship results in bad endings.

Yes, that's right. The ending is only there because of censorship. Therefore, just ignore the ending and consider the choices the guy made and how they led him into this horror story.

It's on DVD now, and seems to be somewhat well remembered, mostly for the ending.

I've heard a lot of complaints about how this film ends. Whether people like the ending or not, it's an ending that is being discussed among some of those who have seen this movie. I've seen the ending mentioned in lists of either best or worst movie endings ever.

Most of Lang's American movies have been 'forgotten'. I think The Big Heat is the only one that really continues to maintain a wider reputation. As for the specifics of this one... Maybe because he took the same three cast members, and made a better movie with them the next year. It's almost like a dry run.

It's considered by some as THE VERY BEST film noir of all-time... not too shabby!
