Past due on DVD

When will we see a Cinema Classics DVD of WILSON? A superb motion picture that still holds lessons for our time. Fox released this on VHS -- it deserves a pristine DVD edition as soon as possible. Darryl F. Zanuck's favorite of all his films, which says something.

I'm with you on that. I had it posted on The DVD Journal's DVD 'Missing in Action' list, so maybe it might get more recognition.

reply

Great! Can you tell me how to get onto that site and list?

I would like to join the chorus demanding a DVD of WILSON, one of the finest historical films ever made. Though ot entirely unbiased (owing to the formidable influence of Wilson's widow), it is a supreme job of filmmaking. Leon Shamroy's Technicolor photography was a sight ot behold, though I don't expect to see it in the DVD. It's box office failure was simply a matter of the right picture at the wrong time.

reply

Sure. Though, to be honest, not so much a "chorus" as a "barbershop quartet."

reply

Love that! (How about the quartet that sang Wilson's reelection song at the 1916 convention in the movie? I think they're free.)

reply

It is one of my "wish list" movies. Don't want to pay a lot for an old VHS copy.

You'd think that with Turner constantly issuing movies on DVD, and with Fox Classics coming out with a great film on DVD every few months, that "Wilson" would have been issued by now.

The amount of films still not on DVD, and the attitude of many video companies, makes me sick. If it doesn't use widescreen, color, 6-track stereo, and flashy special effects, it takes forever for a DVD release. Why is it that when we still had VHS, practically every movie that we could think of was issued in that medium, but with DVD we have to practically beg for some films to be issued?

reply

Once again it's all a matter of economics. Fox has stopped releasing it's classic catalog on DVDs because it doesn't feel it can make any money. The only encouraging note is that Fox is said to be considering a MOD (Manufacture on Demand) program, similiar to the Warner Archives program. One can only hope this happens.

On a side note, I picked up a copy of the music score on CD of "Wilson" a few years ago in a bargain pile for $1.00. Excellent buy, and the included detailed print brochure contains a history of the film from conception to release. I'd recommend it to anyone who's a fan of this film.
