Question about the ending....spoilers

I thought it was implied that John Jr. dies in the end, as the American's marched. A friend disagrees, any opinions/help?

reply

Yes, he dies. His mother asked the doctor how long he had and the doctor replied 4 to 6 hours.
But I don't understand what happened to his girlfriend. There was something about her unit not returning and John, the son, is wearing the nail ring that he had given her. Are we to think that she had died and the ring was sent to him or did she give the ring back to him before they parted?

reply

I think she gave the ring back to him when they were in the taxi together, although I was distracted by a task during this scene, so I wasn't able to follow it closely. I thought it was odd that she gave it back, but I didn't hear her reasoning.

reply

Betsy gave him the ring back in the taxi for luck. When he gave it to her, he told her that a horse shoe nail brings luck. And Betsy probably died in a bombing or something - it was more implied than actually said.

reply

Lol I guess we were watching and reading this post about the same time.

Such a beautiful and touching movie. Another good one about England during WWII is Mrs Miniver.

reply

When he gave her the ring as a young boy he told her it was good luck. So in the taxi when she knows he's going off to fight she gives him back the ring for luck.

reply

I just saw this a few minutes ago, myself. If I recall correctly the voice over said "When he would come home -She would not be there." I understood this to mean that she died.

To the OP,
When John is in bed and talking to his mother, his eyes are well lit onscreen. As his mother describes the passing parade, he turns his head to the side, his expression goes blank, his eyes close and they fall into a deep shadow. I took that to be cinematic symbolism that he had just died at that instant.

reply

Yep, exactly. You saw the same movie I saw. I even think John's eyes kind of go dull just as he expires.
