Hmmmm, scary film? More like romantic story.

It's quite slowwwwww moving, and not scary at all. If it wasn't for Svengoulie, and his funny quips, I would
have switched it off AGES ago. Too boring for me.

Agreed. I made it for one hour then had to move on to something.... ANYTHING else! I found it to be a boring and slow-moving "British-esque" love story that attempts to be creepy. I didn't even have Svengoulie to add some comic relief! Oh well..... I usually enjoy TCM fare, so I suppose one "miss" every so often is inevitable.

No, you really missed something.

I'll bet if you watched it all the way through, you'd find yourself watching it again and again.

I do find it a love story that's suspenseful as compared to a scary movie that's romantic.

So if you don't like romance, you're right, you probably would get bored with it.

I think it is quite scary. If I suddenly smelled unexplainable, strange scents, I'd be scared. But I would not be scared it was a ghost. That is the only thing I'm disappointed with the movie.

I was a bit bored when I first watched it expecting a horror film. But I've become to appreciate it for it's gothic romantic undertones. It's a little spooky but nothing that will keep you up. I think it's a beautiful film.

There are some genuinely eerie moments, especially during the seance sequence...but there's also too much of an emphasis on romance, and I disliked Gail Russell's overly-mannered performance.

I'm glad you came to like it. I think this quote from your post illustrates why many seem to not like it. Uninvited isn't a horror film. Its a ghost story. While horror and ghost stories are related, and can even merge, they are separate things.

A good ghost story may not supply any deaths, blood, violence or anything else. It can also feature things like romantic issues, mysteries and intrigue.

As I said, I'm glad you came to like it. It is a beautiful film.

The modern-day ghost story usually consists of hideous-looking apparitions suddenly jumping toward the camera to startle the audience. Traditional ghost stories, like "The Uninvited", were much less "gotcha!" and a lot more psychological, eerie, and subtle. They were for adults. Kids went to Abbott and Costello movies.
