Has anyone seen this film?

Just watched it today. Kind of a waste of Charles Boyer's abilities but somewhat enjoyable. The kid who played Gilbert was obnoxious.

I watched it yesterday for the first time, and -to be honest- I didn't enjoy it much. I'm a big Irene Dunne fan, and she's great and funny as usual, but I don't think Boyer was the right choice for that role. I didn't perceive any chemistry between them both, and moreover, at least for me, he wasn't funny at all. Which is worse, he looks kind of creepy in a Peter Lorre way. This was the first comedy I saw him in, but I don't think I would like to see another anytime soon. I liked him a lot in "All This, and Heaven Too", "Algiers" and even "Garden of Allah", but I don't think he was good for comedy.

"I just looked the gangly boy up. He was Jerome Courtland, 6 feet 4 inches tall from Tennessee".

As a non-native English speaker, I have to ask this: why on Earth did his character say "good night" every 10 seconds? I'm aware that it's obviously a sort of slang, but what is it supposed to mean? It was the first time I heard it out of context in any movie, classic or not.

It's an interjection like, "good grief," "good god," and, "jeez."

Thanks so much!

I'm watching it now and I don't think I'm going to make it through to the end. I like Irene Dunn, too, and Charles Coburn. But this is painful.

I loved Gilbert! I found him sweet and funny.

If you're fed up with politically correct movies of today, watch this one.

Irene's character comes up a winner by the end of the film - with her smarts as mayor of her small town - , but posters here ignore her smart character and keep talking about the sexism in the movie's script and how terrible it is.

This is not a movie for anyone who thinks a certain word or action deserves condemnation. I enjoyed it.
