50th and 70th anniversary

I have been a big World War II buff since 1981 (when I studied it in 7th grade), and I remember the Doolittle Raiders got alot of attention in April, 1992 for their 50th anniversary. A local TV station had a story every day for a week, when it showed footage from the actual raid, and covered a reunion of the living raiders. It said that over half of them were still living, and made the reunion. James Doolittle himself was also still alive, though 96 and not able to travel (he died the following year, in 1993). And there was also a big story that week on this, in a local newspaper, which I read in a library.

I then heard no more about it until last week, when there was a story about it on the CBS News for its 70th anniversary. They had another reunion, and said that four of the five living raiders came to this reunion. So alot of them apparently died between 1992 and 2012

I attended the 70th reunion in Dayton, Ohio in April. There were 600 or so of us honored to have the chance to meet and thank these heroic men. The brief time I spent with the 4 attending survivors will remain a wonderful and lasting memory.
