Am I the only one???

... Who thinks this is the funniest Thin Man movie?

reply

looks like it.
Actually I do think it is the 2nd best to the original. Not any lesser than the original but 2nd none the less.

The comedy elements are great as always, but I gotta admit I zoned out for the murder mystery angle. It felt especially tacked on in this one. Not that the original is exactly Hitchcockian, but it still has a very interesting mystery plot.

This is the second one of the series I have watched, and didn't like it as much as the first in the series. I loved the Asta scenes....and was dissapointed he seemed to drop out of the senario a lot....but I suppose it would have to be that way at times....

Urania to Terpsichore: "You're so quiet. Musing????"

I'm amused at the fact that Nicky Jr. was left at school but they still brought Asta. Methinks that the producers realized giving Nick & Nora a child was a big mistake.

And I've come to enjoy this entry in the series a lot more the last time I watched it, with the stifling smalltown that Nick got away from to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a detective. I liked the way he relaxed by reading dime store detective magazines. I believe it was "Nick Carter."

I do agree. Their one liner in this about why the child didn't come to visit grandma and grandpa really didn't add up very well IMO, (not that I really cared though)

hallo again xylonian-1, i quite agree in regards the asta scenes- those scenes are my favourites. have not seen this thin man movie in quite a long time so i can not recall how often asta was in it but i do seem to remember feeling a bit disappointed that asta didnt appear as often, lol.

lol pacwarbuff, i think u are correct. as for bringing asta along, he is -once in awhile- useful whilst nick and nora conduct their investigations and asta probably has quite alot more fans than the child so there would be an uproar if asta wasnt in it!

cheers all.

Big time....after all it was Asta who solved things or maybe phrased "dug up the answers" in the original

This is the one I watch the most. Though I love the second one with James Stewart in.

hallo xylonian-1- quite agree with u on that!

spope2 yes the one with jimmy stewart is a favourite as well cuz stewart actually plays the role of the "bad guy' and we rarely see that!

cheers all.

I really liked Nick and Nora with little Nicky in number four of the series. Those were some of my favorite scenes in the movie.

I also really liked the small town angle of this one.

According to the IMDB trivia page for this film (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0037365/trivia) the original Asta retired for this film. My guess is that the replacement wasn't as smart as he was so they couldn't do as many tricks. Just a guess.

I also would have liked this film better if they hadn't used the by-then formulaic ending of a large group of people gathered together for Nick to reveal the "truth of the matter" to. I still enjoyed this film, and like it a bit better than Shadow, but not quite as well as the first three--8/10 was my rating.

Well, in Rio Bravo, when Dude was 'south of the border' they called him 'borachon' - if that helps!

The 2nd one is my favorite, with this one next, then the third movie, and we'll see how the last movie in the series is before I rank it (oddly enough, the first movie didn't impress me as much, but I loved the Powell/Loy pairing--and Asta!!!).

reply

Agreed. I was thinking that something just clicked in this one that was lacking in the other sequels. I especially love Nora's larger part and how she goes about explaining the "pay off" in the end.

Personally, I think I have too much bloom. Maybe that's the trouble with me.

reply

(Mild spoiler) Nora explaining 'the pay-off' is delightful and is a tongue in cheek spoof of the formula of the films themselves. Sure enough the obligatory gun DOES come out that she predicted and its an immense Japanese affair for sniping!

I think this one is the funniest and it's certainly my favorite, with the original being my second-favorite.

I liked this film, really how can you not, after all? The Thin Man movies are very entertaining diversions, every one of them, though I still need to see "Song of the Thin Man", the final one. I liked the comedy aspects of this film a lot, but felt the mystery was merely so-so, so its not my personal favorite. That would be "After the Thin Man", the second one , and in general I just prefer the ones made in the 30's - Nick and Nora just seemed to fit best in that decade to me, just a personal preference. I did feel Myrna Loy was pretty ditzy and screwball in this one, a bit more than normally, and maybe that's why I wasn't as taken with it - normally Nick is 3 sheets to the wind and Nora is the island of serenity and calm. Not really a complaint though, they both are still great!
