A serious mistake

This adaptation of The Shooting Party, the short story by Tchehov becomes completely mistaken. In the first place, nobody explains why the movie begins after the 1916 Revolution. We must suppose that in 1944, war time, the States were in good terms with Soviet Russia.

On the other hand, everything in this effort by German director Douglas Sirk seems cheap, beginning by the settings. Even when some critics agree about Ms Darnell performance, she is not adequate as a poor Russian peasant and George Sanders singing in Russian reaches the ridicule.

At the same time, the producers do not belong to Fox but to a small company and nobody knows what is the reason for this fiasco.
