What happened to the dog???

I guess people didn't think about animals the way we do today, but I was like, "Hey...where did the dog go?" He was with the boys constantly UNTIL he helped save Al's life. Then we never see or hear of him again! I couldn't understand what they named the dog either. What was it? Is it also the name they christened their little boat to?

That dog was well trained too! He stayed right in the middle of those boys when they were yelling, running, fighting, and even hammering! He never looked like he was spooked or anything. Most actor dogs back then were the little Toto like dogs.
