The Fighting Sullivans was an inspiration for Saving Private Ryan.

It's actually the Niland brothers.

When "Saving Private Ryan" came out, People magazine did an article about several families that were the inspiration(s) for this film. The Sullivans were definitely mentioned.

In the book, BAND OF BROTHERS, by the late Stephen Ambrose, he mentiones the last surviving Nyland brother. He was tracked down in Normandy and was returned home to his family. The Fighting Sullivan brothers are mentioned in Saving Private Ryan and were the main reason that the Ryan(NYland) brothers were no longer allowed to serve in the unit or on the same ship. That is why the Ryan brothers die in several different theaters of operation.
