Always gets me-

My grandfather was a conductor/brakemen on the NY Central West Shore Freight line for 50yrs.
Maybe thats part of the reason the scenes where Thomas Mitchell is going to work and walks past the train water tower always listening for his sons call .That scene gets me all the time

I agree about the ending. When Mr. Sullivan looks up at that empty walkway around the water tank where his young sons used to wave at him, then he salutes and turns away in grief -- it's so understated that every little thing in that scene is significant. So simple but astoundingly powerful in the emotions it brings out in the viewer. Gets me every time.

That scene is one of the saddest I have ever experienced. The pain of that father was unfathomable. I will never forget that scene and how I felt when I first saw it.
