Agnes Moorehead

She plays Mrs Emily Hawkins very well. Same sort of character that she later played in "Dark Passage" (1947) with Bogie. Such a b.tch, er, uh, witch. It's obvious why she was chosen to play 'Endora' in the TV show "Bewitched".

She was such a great actress. I thought she was wonderful in The Magnificent Ambersons.... Anyone ever see her in that episode on The Twilight Zone? No words spoken. Just fear, and yes, she certainly could be a b...er, witch! LOL!

reply

the best thing she ever did was fight the little aliens in that Twilight Zone Episode. I never laughed so hard at the end when she was on the roof, bashing in the spaceship and the pilot is going . Earth, can you hear, this planet is full of giant creatures, we are not going to make it (or some such dialogue). She never said one word during the whole episode. What an actress!!!

Once again, I think she was great! She was convincing in her fear and rage. It somehow overshadowed those "little aliens." They reminded me of those cheap little wind up toys that we use to get at the five & dime when I was a kid.
Now days, they could make that episode technically better by using real men as the astronauts with computer technology, but it would'nt be the same. That TZ episode was perfect because Agnes Moorhead was one fine actress.

I completely agree!!! take care

She seems to have specialized in playing "difficult" women. I think of her character in Johnny Belinda who is very difficult until Belinda's pregnancy is revealed then she gathers Belinda to her & shows a deep and abiding love for the girl. Not mother of the year inb Citizen Kane, either. She was so nasty in dark Passage, it was a pleasure to see her demise. I love her in The Magnificant Ambersons when she says, "I can't get up. . .I'm too weak!" Fannie is one of the great characters in cinema. I'll always think of her hair in Bewitched! Lucille Ball Red & with the most outrageous flips on either side.

Hi guys, I'm loveing your Agnes Moorehead talk. She really was something. Check out "All That Heaven Allows". Her character is totally sympathetic and friendly and actually warm.

"It's as if God created the Devil...and gave him...JAWS"

The best thing she ever did undoubtedly would have been something from her radio work. As good a movie and television actress as she was, she was a mighty force on radio, one of its major stars. She was always in demand, and one of the most important return-players on the gigantic-hit radio show "Suspense". I've heard a number of her performances on that show, and you really should try them. Radio shows during classic radio era weren't copyrighted, so all of them from that era are in the public domain.

I think Agnes Moorehead was a great actress. I especially liked her in "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte". It was such a departure from her other roles.

I wonder what her real personality was like.
Was she actually a warm and caring person?
I've never read any bio's about her.
If anyone has any insight about her "off screen" persona, please reply.

reply

My bosses dad knew her. She was a really nice, fun loving and very warm lady with an enchanting personality.

reply

Agnes Moorehead is one of the best actresses ever. She is tops.

one drawback was Agnes always wore
her hair like an old lady, she was
fairly young with Bogie but again
the same hairdo - imagine if she
wore her hair down to her shoulders
ah la Veronica Lake or Lauren Bacall...

reply

Well she did adopt a child and was considered a professional by those she worked with.

Hope that helps.

I remember watching her as Endora when I was a child. I LOVED her!! She was so funny.

We didn't have VCRs or DVDs or TCM back then so I never really knew her as anything but Endora until a few years ago. I started catching her in a movie here and a movie there and realized what a good actress she really was. She could play a b!t@# with the best of them but I think my favorite role was in Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte. I can't think of her name right this minute (Velma?? something like that), but she was as "un-Endora-like" as anybody could be.
It's called a llaaaannce--Hellooooo

reply

Her name was Velma Cruthers !

reply

She was pitch perfect in this role. Couldn't believe it when I came to imdb and saw her name listed in this movie. This is the same lady who later played Endora?

reply

Although her character isn't pleasant, Agnes Moorehead does such a great job portraying her.
And seeing her lead the Conga Line...wow!

reply

Agnes told a reporter in later years that she was such a conniving bitch on screen in this movie, that after movie goers saw her, some would spit in her face in public, cuss her out, throw bottles and send her hundreds of death threats. She became very wary of even appearing in public to shop for groceries.

reply

Good Lord, I didn't think her character what that evil!
I have a biography on Agnes, will have to get it out and look through it again.
