Tony and Jane

So maybe it's just because Joseph Cotten and Jennifer Jones played romantic leads in other movies, but did anyone else kind of expect him to end up with her in the end?

Yeah, I know at first she was only 17 and it was just a schoolgirl crush, but after Bill died, I thought perhaps that was when she matured and when he randomly came back at the end, I was totally surprised that he still was carrying a torch for her mother. And since this was the case, I didn't really see the point in killing off Bill. I mean, even though Tony was a bit older than Jane, I think it would have been a slightly more interesting ending that Jane agreeing to write letters to some random guy she meets at the Christmas party within the last ten minutes of the movie.

Again, I could just feel this way because of the actors involved, rather than the characters.

I believe the "random guy" was the patient (the sailor who hated the ocean) she was taking care of at the hospital.

I thought having the sexy suave Jo Cotton pining over the mother throughout was a way of placating Claudette for taking the role of the mother in the film.

That relationship walked a fine line. Once Tony realized Jane was crushing on him, he should have been more careful. Saying things like "I wish I was 17 again" just encouraged her. He was a bit of a tease, really.

He was a tease, a flirt, a charmer, a smoothy, a lady's man, a sophisticate, but only a synthetic heel because his heart was in the right place and he didn't want to hurt anyone. Surely Ann appreciated his treating her as if she were an attractive woman rather than as a mother. It feels good to have someone in your life who thinks you are great but who can be trusted not to go too far. She could be an adult with him. But he had to learn how to deal with her daughters as they grew up idolizing him. The whole family benefited from the relationship although of course the missing husband would immediately take back his position as the man in the family and Tony would make that easy for him. Which all goes to show that a man and a woman CAN have a platonic friendship. I agree with the poster who said this was a good example to the audience of how to conduct yourself in wartime. Or anytime, really, if you are mature enough.

I too was hoping he would end up with Jane. Joseph Cotten was hot in this as he was as Uncle Charlie.
