Why does Jennifer Jones talk like a 4 yr old in this movie?

Jennifer Jones, in this movie, acts like she is 4 or 5 years old. She slurs her words in some parts and it so annoys me. The only time she seems her age is when she is trying to talk Bill into having some self esteem! Some posters on here say that JJ is so great in this movie and all I can see and hear is her weird speaking voice. So she seems grown up in the end because she slurs her words less? Weird is all I can say.

Couldn't agree more. And her scenes with "Bill" were beyond annoying.

Jennifer always had a slight lisp, she was playing a younger character, when her character becomes older and experienced she loses the girlish voice and manner. JJ was a brilliant actress and I found her scenes with Bill very cute and touching.

I think Selznick kept building up her part at the expense of leaving Shirley Temple with very little to do. Temple was fresh and natural as the younger sister Brig and should have been given the same careful treatment as JJ.

I didn't worry about it she was cute playing a GIRL not the TYPE she was at the time.

I saw three dusters...inside the dusters were three men, inside the men were three bullets.

If she gets your panties in that much of a bunch, you probably shouldn't ever watch it again.

ever seen 'the song of bernadette'- that's the movie that she won the oscar for. she spoke exactly the same way in that role.

I have seen this movie four or five times now. The first time I saw it, the Shirley Temple character annoyed me beyond belief. Now (maybe because I am older), I find her character completely "in character" and Jennifer Jones irritating.
I assume DOS "coached" her throughout the filming, so maybe he tried to hard to make her his ideal, the same way Hearst did with Marion Davies (although I really don't like making that comparison).

reply

yea, i think that was the case too. he was definitely in charge of her career, and probably coached her acting too.

i've only seen jennifer jones in two other movies besides this one and she pretty much speaks the same way in all of them.

reply

Because she was Selzicks puppet. That jerk babyfied everything. Dos, totally overrated. Since you went away is nauseating and sickening sentimental.

It was 1944, the times were different, behavior was different.
