Bogie, Greenstreet, Lorre, and Claude Rains in a story about the French occupation. Even Corinna Mura takes an encore on her guitar. Directed by Michael Curtiz and filmed by Jimmy Wong Howe.

It's not the Epstein brother's tight script, there's no love triangle, and the dark beauty Michele Morgan subs for Ingrid Bergman, but it's an entertaining story and warmly familiar adventure with the Warner stock company. Look for Vladimir Sokoloff (the old man from Magnificent Seven) in a prototypical role as 'Grandpere'

Interestingly Michèle had been offered 'Casablanca', but RKO wouldn't release her for the sum offered by Warner. I read her autobiography and she truly loathed Curtiz during the shooting of this.

Hmm... it would be more correct to write German occupation, unless you are referring to the French occupation of the Ruhr in 1923-25!

I especially liked Peter Lorre in this. When he is talking about being a safe-cracker, just the way he rubs his fingers together is charming.

It was nice to see all those Casablanca characters. I liked seeing the young guy who was losing at roulette (have you tried 22?) as one of the prisoners.

I expected to see Cuddles Sakal polishing a tray and offering everyone coffee when they got on board the ship.

odd i didn't pick that up while watching it, but ofcourse. all i could think of was i've never seen so many moustaches at the same time. unfortunately i most likely won't come across it again, i used to tune into both casablanca and this but the tcm (nordic) version i get no longer air classic movies, that's right, turner classic movies no longer air classic movies...
