Why would a doctor....?

I'm in the middle of watching this movie for the first time. I just got to the part where June Allyson's little sister tells her she's pregnant because the doctor decided an 8 year old needed to know BEFORE anyone else. WTF!? Did I miss a scene that showed that June Allyson already knew or was this just a really contrived way for her overly cutesy sister to break the news. What kind of doctor doesn't inform a woman about her own pregnancy first? I don't know how it was in 1944, but I'm pretty sure it's against the law to talk about a persons personal medical history especially to an 8 year old!

She knew, hence all the hoopla about the other women not allowing her to do heavy lifting and the last instructions from the doctor was to "Take your calcium." Mike is the only one who didn't know. (and you.)

Thank you for the explanation. I wasn't giving the movie my full attention. I figured I must have missed something. lol

I thought that was weird too. Why wouldn't he tell the mother she was pregnant? I just watched this and if he did tell her, it sure wasn't while any cameras were rolling.

The doctor was played by Harry Davenport who played Dr. Meade in Gone With the Wind. Assuming he was at least 50 at the time of the Civil War, that would make him about 130 when this movie was made. No wonder he got a little confused about who to tell about the pregnancy.
