Some flaws...

This movie wont belong to my favorites, despite some nice cinematographics like seeing only the cigaret smoke over the sofa in the house by the see, or Malloy's reflections in glasses. Malloys, prefiguring Jaws, in James Bond btw. I notice also some links to Vertigo regarding the hair seen from behind...

Over all, this is derived from a book (thriller), where the intrigue is most important. Also the plot, the suspense, this detective play takes over and eats all other aspects of the movie. There isn't much left, as romance, actor movie, film noir etc.

Something to notice in theses early films noirs like Double indemnity, The postman ring twice, most of them feature evil women. Later, the Big combo, etc, with James Cagney this is less the case...

Methinks, too much plot-driven.

what in god's name is your point?

Cagney's not in The Big Combo. Cornel Wilde is though.
