Pidgeon or Vulture?

The Greer Garson/Walter Pidgeon teamings were usually enjoyable. But did anyone else think that in this case Pidgeon's character was a mostly distasteful rascal? I guess it's a credit to his ability that Pidgeon made the character quite unlikeable.
