Enjoyable movie but....********SPOILE RS!!!*****

I can't believe there are so few comments about this movie. It was enjoyable enough....entertaining anyway.

I do how some problems and questions though. Who the heck were here her kids? They never really developed any of the characters coming to the house.

The son that stole the money.....he stole 31 million? That is a lot of money...the whole money thing was confusing and stupid.

Guess I should read the book!

Also, Walter Pidgeon seemed old from the beginning and Greer Garson in that BLACK WIG was awful! (Not commenting on her acting here, just the wigs).

Hey, let's get some comments rolling about this movie!

I just watched the movie for the first time and here is what I can make out about her children:

She had only 2 kids, Alice (the bitter drunk divorcee) and Herbert (who passed away off screen)

Based on what "Susie Parkington" said in the movie, her son Herbert grew up, married & had kids before he died in a polo accident. So I assume Madeleine, the woman who had the rancher husband was one of Herbert's kids.

Now this is the part that confuses me: Who exactly was Amory Stilham? He called Mrs. Parkington "granny". He & his wife had 2 kids, Jane & Jack whom both called Mrs. Parkington "great-granny". So why didn't Amory have Parkington as a last name? His wife didn't seem like the "Parkington" and it was mentioned that they weren't true Parkingtons.

I guess I'll have to read the book too.

reply

Yeah...I'd like an answer to that too!

I haven't read the book myself, but based upon the film I believe that Amory Stilham was married to a granddaughter of Susie and Gus Parkington -- Helen the daughter of their deceased son Herbert. If this is correct it means that Amory would not be a real Parkington, but his wife and children would be.

reply

Oh good thinking. I hadn't considered that. Wish they had explained that in the movie.
Thanks!!

Good movie anyway.

reply

Thanks everyone but I am still lost.. Amory's wife was Suzie's grand-daughter? They did not acknowledge that at all nor did she seem to be of any value at all but then again neither did Alice or that other one. I am still confused.

Armory was Suzie and Gus' Grandson-in-law, he was married to the daughter of their son or daughter.

Darling, I am trouble of the most spectacular kind!

When they greet she calls Susie "grandmother". Garson is in over-the-top-great-granny mode so you must strain to hear Amory's wife speak over Garson, but she does say it. Amory's wife is the actual relation while Amory just calls Susie "granny" in the same way that he calls Alice "Auntie" at the beginning.

To add to that, Amory also says, "Well, I could use some liquid funds and you can charge it up against my wife's share of the inheritance." That about sums it up.

Thank you, gribfritz2! I have puzzled about this for a long time, I believe it's cleared up now. Or at least, I hope so.... Great vehicle for La Garson!
