Trippy

and his sister Fanny have a most unusual relationship. If the film had been made in the late 90s, Al Pacino as Tony Montana could have played Trippy. Sort of an incestuous bent, IMO. Great film though, and a most surprising ending.

I felt the relationship had an incestuous feel to it aswell too! Glad to know that someone feels the same. Trippy was a real rat.

It doesn't sound like a stretch. Trippy is probably the only person Fanny truly cares about in her entire life.

Yeah. Ironic how she treats her daughter like Leah.

I thought that comment was made to show just how shallow & selfish she was for marrying Job when she obviously didn't love him.

reply

Their closeness stems from the strength of their mutual support of each other's childishness.

reply

I really don't think so. I think she loved him only as her dear brother. Vain people, deep down, are miserable because their whole life is one big show. Trippy was one of the only people she could be herself around and they'd been through EVERYTHING in life together. That's the feeling I got anyway.

What struck me as ironic is that after Trippy dies... he's never mentioned by anyone again! Not even Fanny, even though she loved him so much! I think a good idea for a scene in a movie would have had Fanny looking back at why she married Job and the sacrifices she made for Trippy... and wondering if it was all worth it.

Trippy was a racist, mercenary crook, anyway.

Such a scene exists; it's where she founds out Trippy has died. She actually says aloud (and Job overhears) that the only reason she married Job was to care for Trippy.

reply

I meant after that scene. Halfway through the film, I almost forgot Fanny even had a brother!

You're absolutely right.

They'd lost their parents and they were all alone in the world for all intents and purposes.

reply

Hey, you've got War lover/homewrecker/orphan collector Angelina Jolie French-kissing her brother..........and NOT in a movie!

reply

I didn't feel anything incestuous was going on. They were orphans and only had each other and neither one was really an adult. They leaned on each other. But who named him Trippy? I guess it was a nickname, and it did seem to fit, but did anyone even once mention his real name?
