Hated It

And before someone labels me a "troll", I'm a great admirer of Sturges, especially films like
"Remember the Night", "The Lady Eve", "The Palm Beach Story" and his best film,
"Sullivan's Travels."

But THIS one was a once-only viewing for me. Yes, the cast is good, but the film is too
strident, too talky (even for Strurges) and unfunny. How many times are we supposed to
watch Demarest or Bracken fall? How many times are we supposed to hear dishes smash?
How many times are we supposed to hear Bracken stutter?

The film is also about 15 minutes too long, and there is too much screen time devoted
to Demarest, who screams at everyone in sight. Also, we're supposed to believe that
Diana Lynn is FOURTEEN??? Come on. 18 would've been somewhat believable, but
what 14 year-old possesses that kind of maturity and would dare speak to her father
like that? NO 14 year-old, then or now, would have that kind of wit or nerve. Ridiculous.

I also find it gross that we're supposed to support DUMB Betty Hutton, who gets drunk
and loses her virginity to some idiot who is never named. Extremely off-putting, even
by today's standards. Did this "soldier" date-rape her?

I know I'm in the minority, but this one is a stinker.

I saw this one many, many years ago when I was a child. I thought it was funny although I didn't really understand what was going on! Did they even say the word 'pregnant'?

Now I'm curious to find it again just to see how bad it was.

No, they didn't use the word "pregnant."

Remember, I'm in the minority, so if you rent it, you'll probably like it. I felt as if I was being HAMMERED to death.

Banned by.those Hays Office jerks.

I have to agree with you for all the reasons you've stated.

I love movies from the 30s and 40s and probably watch more of them than I do modern films. But comedy is generally the genre that has dated the most IMHO. I had to leave this after about 30 minutes, I couldn't take any more Eddie Bracken.

The one line that did actually make me laugh was "It had a Z in it" "His hair?"

I agree that it doesn't hold up against the best of Sturges but I don't agree with your moralistic takes on the characters. Prudish much?
