I liked it, but this sort of thing always bugs me

I found this very similar to Gaslight, and more suspenseful - with fantastic lighting and some really great scenes. I haven't seen the other incarnations of The Lodger so I have nothing else to compare it with.

However, one thing really annoyed me. They made a big deal about the Ripper being left-handed, yet when they corner him he prepares to meet them with his knife brandished in his right hand. It looked like his left may have been injured but it wasn't clear and it seems like just an oversight.

They make a big deal about the Ripper maybe being left handed, maybe right. The inspector can't be sure either way; he just knows the RH print lifted from the glass doesn't match the print he already has. In the event, the Ripper turns out to be favoring his RH, which implies his practice was to attack frontally, not from behind as originally thought. Well spotted! (To be picky, even if the inspector originally had good reason to assume the Ripper was LH, it's doubtful if he would have had good reason to assume the first print was RH, besides which there were ample grounds to arrest the suspect and then obtain prints from both RH and LH!)

The sort of thing that bugs me is when someone who's supposed to know how to use a gun jabs it vigorously toward the target each time he fires, as the inspector does here... ach, movies.

It makes the bullet go about three miles per hour faster, making it much more lethal!

For some reason it reminded me of Seance on a Wet Afternoon.
