The Lodger 1944

I'm curious to know how many other fans might have been trying to find this movie on home video and been puzzled by the strange reluctance of 20th Century Fox to release it. I have heard of a few obscure companies that might have a tape or dvd, but I'm not aware of any official release plans. Does anyone know of a reason why The Lodger is not available? Copyright, ownership problems, they don't think enough people would buy it,etc

reply

I'd like to get hold of a UK version DVD but hard to find.

i'm looking at the alain silver homepage www.alainsilver.com(he has done several commentaries on many film noir's--) and there is a little section that says the lodger will soon have audio commentaries, as if it were to soon be released on DVD. there's no information as to when...but at least it's a little hope.

reply

Just a quick/short note to let you know that "The Lodger" is now available on DVD.

It was shown nationally on US television (AMC-cable), overnight on March 22/23, 2007. So it might turn up on AMC again one of these days. -- S.P.Hill.

I bought my copy as part of a Fox Horror Classics set that also includes Hangover Square and The Undying Monster. All 3 together for only 30 bux wasn't bad at all.

I just got the same DVD set on Amazon for $15.99 this week.

MY DVD COLLECTION INDEED IS VAST, NUMBERING OVER 600 OLDIES BUT GOODIES, AND NOW I CAN PROBABLY SAY THEORETICALLY IT IS COMPLETE ... THIS FILM IS WITHOUT QUESTION THE MOVIE THAT I FIRST WANTED TO OWN ABOUT FIFTEEN YEARS AGO AND HAVING SEEN IT ON TV. I REMEMBER GOING IN THOSE VIDEO STORES LONG AGO, BEFORE DVD, AND ASKING FOR, "THE LODGER, 1944", AND NEVER FINDING IT. I EVEN GOT HITCHCOCK'S SILENT "LODGER" TO MAKE ME FEEL BETTER. THEY NEVER SHOW IT ON TCM EITHER, DON'T KNOW WHY. BUT TONIGHT, AFTER HAVING JUST BOUGHT IT YESTERDAY, I AM GOING TO VIEW IT FOR THE SECOND TIME IN MY LIFE...LIFE IS GOOD.

reply

SORRY, THIS FILM IS NOT AS GOOD AS I ONCE THOUGHT...DON'T RECOMMEND IT AT ALL.

If you don't recommend this brilliant and atmospheric masterpiece, you have no conception of what film making is about.

reply

I would heavily recommend it and it is equal to Hitchcock's version. I thought the only weaknesses was the melodramtic ending (complete with a London police officer with a gun. Hitch at least did the same thing in Man but showed the police breaking into the gun shop.)

The melodrama of Hanover Square was better done (playing in the burning building.) If you can pick the Fox Horror Classics Vol. 1 with those movies for under $20, consider it a buy. It also has a Undying Monster a decent Hounds of Bakersville retread with excellent direction but everything else medicore.

Ridiculous hyperbole.

I received my copy of this box set today, after 20 years of waiting I can finally see a decent print of this wonderful movie.
Laird Cregar could have been one of the Hollywood Greats, what a tragedy he died so young.
Brahm was a terribly underrated director, The Lodger is a true classic.
