One of Hitchcock's boldest and most successful experiments

He did retrn to the "minimalist formula in later films such as Rope and Rear Window, but I believe this stands out as the best.

I was born when she kissed me. I died when she left me. I lived a few weeks while she loved me.

THis can be seen from different perspectives. I'm looking at it from the perspective of the audiences who first saw it, and i believe it to be brilliant seeing it as 1944 audiences saw it.

Captain Warren 'Rip' Murdock: I'm the brass-knuckles-in-the-teeth-to-dance-time type.

SPOILERS

It is brilliant, because it has strong messages in it. Alice Mackenzie says I don't understand why people kill each other. In the end, She is one of the people who is responsible for the death of Willy.

reply

Strong messages don't make brilliant films. They may be incidental to a good film, but not the reason for its quality.

Its just a matter of opinion.

Nothing happens in the whole film? What do you think life in a lifeboat is like? TV and DVD's and beer chugging contests? Being lost at sea is dreadfully boring. Hitchcock almost perfectly captured that grinding sameness.

As to "nothing happens", you must have slept through the film. There was plenty going on. It just was very subtle.

With so little, he is always able to do so much.

Fine, fine film. Some of Hitchcock's lesser known films are just brilliant.

the lead actress is really getting wild on the boat, sharing kisses with one fella after another, in many of hitchcock movies i find the female parts rather stiff, but this woman was something else, and apparently in real life she had fun with the director's last name as described in the dvd bonus material, what a neat shot as she breaks through a paper one of them is reading, and i've never seen a cooler hitchcock cameo, much of the movie is so gruesome to watch, i won't reveal anything, but one thing i have to say, what a change henry hull's role goes through, warning major spoiler follows here though, i was stunned as he joined them in a mob like situation attacking the german, all but one man joined in, after that i was confused and the whole mood of the situation changes and i had to follow the fate of the one man who didn't joined in, and i wondered why they didn't gather the things the german had on him. first it hit me by surprise the people i watched it with didn't like this when usually they like hitchcock movies, then again here i didn't expect all these negative comments, i admit i would really have liked the ending to drag out a bit and not end so abruptly, but i guess that would have taken away the whole concept of the entire movie taking place on a little lifeboat.

beam hit right at my heart,
as you get rid any corner of dark,
perspiring sends me on a shockwave,
with lumpy throat float your shore sail,
singular seductive persuasion,
like old tale of cleopatra legend,
try to pay you no mind,
but you move me like a kite,
and its like fighting against a sky,
as your energy burns me up,
my ashes blow in space of love.
