Hitch's Scribes Didn't Know Their Baseball

Bill Bendix's character was a Brooklyn Dodger fan. Before he became delirious, Bendix noted the Pittsburgh Pirate were "17 POINTS" behind the Dodgers. He probably meant 17 games behind in the standings (or if discussing a single game, 17 runs). But never 17 points! MLB is not the NHL.

Win percentage. That's what I took that to mean.

Right, but a baseball fan would never say "points." Even a Brooklynite. It's "games ahead" or "games behind."

Yeah. The word "points" was a mistake. Not a huge mistake but definitely the wrong term.

It should have been "games". Oh well.
