If Hitch were to have directed 'Laura', how would he do his 'cameo'?

I'd love it to involve Waldo, somehow...maybe he could play his manservant who fusses with the wine while Waldo waits for Laura's call, that fateful Friday evening.

From what little I can recall of Hitch's cameos, he usually has the part of an "extra" -- just an extra body in a scene; standing on a street, walking by, getting on a train, etc. (His photo appeared in a magazine or newspaper advertisement in "Lifeboat.")

I can't see him doing anything as "intrusive" as fussing with the wine. I don't think he would have done that. Doesn't seem to be his style.

He could have been an extra in any of the restaurant scenes, or a guest at Ann's party -- where Laura and Shelby meet. Of course, the camera angles would have been adjusted so that he was clearly seen.

Hitch would have fit right in: ".....one night at a party at Ann Treadwell's.....

It was one of her usual roundups of bizarre and nondescript characters...

- corralled from every stratum of society."

Great idea, Gubbio!

Or, how about, for a split second, a virtual frame of film, his - and not Laura's - visage appears in the portrait over her mantle piece?

Uh, no. That would be creepy.

The only thing I can think of that would be creepier than that would be Hitch sharing the tub with Waldo in the opening scene.

Or Hitch giving Waldo a massage after his bath, then they both light a cigarette and lie back and stare at the ceiling.

LeeAnn Rimes. No it doesn't.

Now, how am I supposed to get that image out of my head ? !!!

reply

I sure am glad you stopped there.

How about Hitch modeling for the soap ad that Shelby shows Laura? (The one that had Diane Redern posing in it.) It would be sort of like Hitch appearing in that diet aid ad in "Lifeboat".

reply

LOL! The words "Hitch" and "modeling" just don't go together somehow.

When the detective opened the secret compartment in the bottom section of the clock, he'd find "Hitch," instead of the shotgun.

reply

Yes, and just his disembodied (but still very viable) head.

"No, I don't like to cook, but I have a chicken in the icebox, and you're eating it."

reply

He'd probably be seen at the party, standing in the background.

How about Hitch comes out of Laura's apartment that night Waldo was stalking her...Waldo acts stunned, but relieved...and then Jacoby the portrait painter (who knows he looks more like an athlete) comes out, ten seconds later, leaving Waldo apoplectic.

reply

Good idea, except that Hitch didn't usually do such "important" cameos. To my knowledge, he was usually just seen in the background briefly or something.

Thank you. Hitch liked blondes, anyway!

Waldo sees the Hitch silhouette when he's spying on Laura's apartment window.

He would be hiding in the clock - the cop punches the little door - ah here we have our killer!
