Was Our Dear Laura a slut?

Bouncing between half a dozen men?

______

reply

I've always wondered the same thing.....

There was Waldo, Jacoby, Shelby, and while engaged to Shelby, she was falling for Mark.

According to Waldo, "There were others, of course... but her own discrimination ruled them out... before it became necessary for me to intercede....."

Sort of like putting lipstick on a pig, isn't it?

I don't think so. It's normal for a girl to be interested in more than one man at times. I don't even think she was interested in Waldo. She just saw him as a close friend. And the girl was beautiful so naturally many men pursued her. She had her choice in men, so naturally it was hard to choose between so many.

Bouncing between half a dozen men?
Laura never "bounced."

She wore very expensive foundation garments!

reply

Single and "dating" does not make one a slut.

reply

She had a series of boyfriends and Waldo tried to get her to dump each and everyone of them as he didn't approve of any of them due to the fact that he wanted to be the only man in her life.. There was nothing sluttish in her behaviour. Waldo was obsessive about her so viewed any potential suitor in a negative manner.

reply

Laura seema to have a lot of worthless men in her circle. And she seems pretty bright, so she must have a few agenda.

Yes, bless her. Tho she was an icy piece of work, I must say.

reply

Our dear Laura liked to get around, to say the least.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

reply

What makes you think she slept with all of them?

I think the question should be: was Shelby Carpenter a slut?

We assume Shelby was a slut... Mrs Treadwell even kept him on retainer!

It was certainly hinted that he slept around, but we don't know for sure.

I agree, MrsElleryQueen. Back in the day, a woman could date a man, have him up to her apartment for a drink, etc. and not sleep with him. (Of course, she still can.) Shelby was a kept man, and then some.

"No, I don't like to cook, but I have a chicken in the icebox, and you're eating it."

reply

The impression I get about that Jacoby fellow is that this is exactly what she did. She invited him up to her apartment for a drink, they kissed a bit, and he left later on. I think that if it had gone on much further, Waldo would have been knocking on her door. That same night, he found a way to break off that relationship (by writing that article). I get the impression that he broke off all her relationships that way....so early on that Laura didn't even have time to think about starting a sexual relationship.

Agreed. 

I've always had the impression that she was saving herself for the right guy.

If she really wanted to sleep around, then she probably wouldn't have let Waldo into her life. After all, he's the one who "gave her her start", as he put it, and if she had been sleeping around, he could easily have ruined her reputation. In those days, she likely would have lost her job because of "inappropriate behaviour". I'm not even sure that she could have kept the job once she was married.

My guess is that she wanted sex only after marriage, and she just kept the men in her life at arm's length. This is why Waldo got jealous. He couldn't have her, so he made sure that no other man could. Most of the men (like Jacoby) weren't a threat to him, but Shelby was, which is why he planned to catch Laura with him and murder her. Of course, his plan backfired.

Appreciate and agree with your take on this, MEQ. I "know" Waldo saw Shelby as a threat...I just don't understand why.

"No, I don't like to cook, but I have a chicken in the icebox, and you're eating it."

reply

Well, she was considering marrying him. Therefore, he was certainly a threat to Waldo.

Waldo simply didn't want Laura to have any interest besides himself, especially other men.

Yes. I guess I just don't get why she wanted to marry him, in the first place!

I think that he was the sort of guy who said all the right things to women to make them fall for him. Personally, I didn't find him attractive at all. Also, I have never liked Vincent Price's voice. But I guess Laura was mesmerized...at least for awhile. Then she came to her senses.
