Drop Dead Funniest Line in the Movie!

Dana Andrews on phone at party with superior. He's about to make the arrest:

"No. I can't tell you now, I'm not alone."

Just before he arrests Laura in front of that same room full of people!!!

It didn't strike me as funny, as much as odd.

Apparently, he just didn't want to discuss police business in front of a crowd.

Why the "discretion" on the phone -- when he arrests Laura as soon as he hangs up?

Doesn't make much sense -- unless it was done to heighten the audience's tension.

The best among pretty much everything Waldo said. (When at the party): "Laura dear, I can't stand these morons any longer. If you don't come with me this instant, I shall run amok".

reply

I like that one, too. Something about that word, "amok"!

"No, I don't like to cook, but I have a chicken in the icebox, and you're eating it."

reply

Great, classic line.

It was a sure way to get everyone's attention so he could observe their reactions when he arrested Laura.

"I have had singing."

reply

The lead detective uttered that "funny" line at the party, because he wanted to gauge the reactions of those attending the party, to see if the murderer (whom he believed to be in attendance) would give himself (or, herself) away.

The real killer might suddenly exit the party or have a facial expression that would reveal his/her guilt.

That's a standard practice in criminal investigations to this day. You pretend that you already know the identity of the killer in front of a crowd of suspects, then see what happens.

In many cases, the murderer indicates who s/he is, by "reacting wrongly."

reply

What's funny about it? He didn't want her to know until he arrested her. By saying "I'm not alone", he meant that the person he was about to arrest was in the room. It had nothing to do with all the others who were present at the time.

Waldo: "my dear, either you were born on a extremely rustic community, where good manners are unknown, or you suffer from a common feminine delusion that the mere fact of being a woman exempts you from the rules of civilized conduct."

☺~ My favorites funniest lines of the movie was:

-when Waldo Lydecker said to a young man while he was going to apologize to Laura. "If you come a little bit closer, my boy, I can just crack your skull with my walking stick."

-Also when Shebly asked Laura to dance and she told him that she wasn't alone. Shelby says "I bet he still doing the polka. And Waldo responded "Excuse me, please. Yes. Betsy Ross taught it to me.

Some other funny Waldo lines:

“I concealed my annoyance with masterly self-control.”

“I alternated between moods of over-optimism and over-pessimism.”

My favorite funny line was after McFergenson asked Anne if she was in love with Shelby, Waldo said- “This is starting to assume fabulous aspects.” Hilarious!
