lavish but empty

Hi,one can never be too rich or have too many friends. One of the reasons Ginger did this movie was it was in color,a first for her. Otherwise it's a dull version of the stage hit, with dated ideas. After paying alot of money to the songwriters,it's odd Paramount threw out most of the score. Lavish sets, costumes but mainly for people into older movies for decor and stuff, not really a good musical.

Yes, from many a report of the day, Lady in the Dark cost Paramount a fortune in costume, accessories and set design, often summarized as the most costly wardrobe in film history (per 1944 dollars).

So, yes, such a lavish production, but missing the mark in other important areas, such as screen adaptation (script based upon play), happiness on the set (some performers were said to suffer a great deal of strife at the at queen bee wings), and lack of fine composure-ship, et al.

Still a must for Ginger or Ray completists, but probably not a film to return to revisit on any sort of regular basis.
