Susquehanna Hat Company!

Possibly one of the funniest skits in a A&C film. First saw it as a kid in the 70s and watching it again this evening, its still a hilarious scene. Its rather ironic considering this skit almost didn't make the movie. I was reading on-line that Costello implored this gag be used in the film but the producers were against it. Costello then decided to call up some old colleagues and direct the skit himself. Nice going Lou.

And speaking of irony .... the bathroom sequence was a gas. Funny though how Mr. Van Cleve was able to sleep through a house full of guests singing and dancing - not to mention the chaos the dynamic duo were making in his private bath - yet the whole reason why he had the butler call a plumber in the first place was to fix a small drip because he "would never be able to sleep with that dripping noise."

I saw a play on the Susquehanna Hat Company gag years ago on SCTV with Martin Short as Jamie Farr in Drag doing the Susquehanna bit with John Candy as Merlin Olsen, I think. An overenthusiastic Jamie just ended up annoying the hell out of Merlin Olsen who didn't get the humor.

Anyways, it was good to see the proper skit after all these years.

Seeing it again on youtube just cracks me up-especially the part where Luigi really goes nuts over the name and smashes his pottery while Lou's trying to stop him. I also loved the flooding of the bathroom and it was good that Bud didn't try to run off and leave Lou high and dry.
