Ida Lupino

I have had little exposure to Ms. Lupino's work before, mostly her tough, wrong side of the track roles so I was pleasantly surprised here.
I was also struck by how beautiful she looked - alas to be young and in your twenties.

She's gorgeous in this movie!

Yes, I'm not that familiar with IL's work before her later dramas and film noirs, but she was quite beautiful. Reminds me a lot of Hedy Lamarr.

The young Ida Lupino was cute as a button.

reply

Don't you mean as cute as lace panties?

reply

Lace panties? Never heard that expression before. And while "cute as a button" does not seem to make much sense, the generally accepted meaning of the phrase is: very attractive, adorable, charming, almost always associated with being small and therefore extra cute.

So, no I did not mean lace panties. And as I was typing out the phrase "cute as a button" I was thinking to myself that it did not make much sense. But the meaning of the phrase sums up my opinion of the young Ida Lupino.

It is a line from Murder My Sweet with Dick Powell in 1944. Moose was looking for Vera and he said she was as cute as lace panties.

reply

Thank you, good to know. Claire Trevor was more pantie than buttonie in Murder My Sweet.
