Duped by DVD

I just bought the DVD of this. On the packaging it ways it is a 2009 digital revision with Dolby sound. I beg to differ. What I got is of poor quality in spots. In the beginning the picture is too bright and later on there are vertical lines indicating the DVD is just a film transfer. And, I bought it from TMC and sent by Movies Unlimited. This is not the first time I've gotten very poor quality DVDs from Movies Unlimited.

Good idea, wmoores, to mention this problem! Maybe others can avoid getting ripped off. I agree with you about Movies Unlimited/TMC; I have had a lot of problems with them. I too bought "I'll Be Seeing You" from them, about two months ago, and it is of very poor quality. Mine is a VCI Entertainment DVD from 2004, so I don't know if it's the same as you have. Apparently the MGM version, no longer in print but available at Amazon through outside vendors, is the one to get. It's the only version listed at Amazon, here:

http://www.amazon.com/Ill-Seeing-You-Ginger-Rogers/dp/B0002KPHXI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1266768466&sr=1-1

I guess I'll buy it and junk the lousy one TMC sent me.

A have a copy of the movie released by MGM up for bid or it can be bought right now!

That settles it! Time to get the MGM version. Thanks very much for pointing this out, brenel!

My MGM version of "I'll Be Seeing You" came and it's fabulous in quality. A different movie! Not only is there additional footage in the train scene with the GI's, but also some in the scene at the Marshall home where Henry, Mary's uncle, is telling Barbara, the daughter, to behave herself. Very important bits! Thanks, brenel, for the confirmation of the MGM version's superiority!

it was released in the uk under fremantle media, seems a pretty good copy, its approx 81 minutes long is this a complete copy?

reply

The MGM version is 85 minutes. It seems the Freemantle Media one has some bits cut -- probably from the train and the Marshall home scenes. But if the picture quality is high, it's a better than average copy.

reply

the picture quality was pretty good, however how easy is the mgm copy to get hold of?

The MGM version is available at Amazon.co.uk:

It's Region 1, of course, but you probably have an all-region player by now. I had to buy one to be able to watch several of Ginger's movies.

I don't get why mgm and fox dvds are locked to region 1, surely the 'that's entertainment' boxset is mgm? thats region free! I came accross a "review" for 'HCG' on a french website and have messaged them to ask how they could review a film that appears to be lost, unless of course the review and the ratings come from the original reviews written in 1932.

i found the "review" of 'HCG' on Films de France under its european title of 'Embassy Girl' they replied to my email saying that they were having a hard time tracking it down (no suprises there) but that its well regarded, that sort of comment made me wonder if there may be a copy out there somewhere.. or if someone somewhere remembers seeing it! i've seen a couple of reviews for 'HCG' that were written around the time of its release, so i dont know if thats where TCM got its info from..

As for region 1 dvds, it makes me wonder why multi region dvd players exist sometimes if some distributors aren't willing to make their dvds more easily accessible. they complain about piracy enough lol

the most useful information i've ever seen relating to 'HCG' and i unfortunately can't remember where, was that back in 1937 when they tried to reissue it they ran into problems with the Hays office, which i guess would relate as to why no one seems to have it.. although as i've only read that once i have no idea whether theres an ounce of truth in it..

Whenever i look on the website for TCM (uk) they never seem to have anything in their database that i would like to see lol

The information about Hat Check Girl (full synopsis and notes) at the TCM website is identical, word for word, to the AFI synopsis and notes. I believe TCM has an arrangement with AFI to use the information at its site. It could be the other way around, I suppose, but that seems less likely. But the presence of this information at TCM does not necessarily mean TCM has access to the film.

At the AFI page for the film, (http://www.afi.com/members/catalog/DetailView.aspx?s=&Movie=7269), at the very top of the page, is the eye symbol, indicating that someone at AFI viewed the film while preparing the synopsis and notes. This is the strongest evidence that the source of the information is AFI, and it raises the question whether they really do not have the film, as dirty_dancing_forever was told. How could they have produced such a detailed synopsis and notes without access to the film?

Hmm, if afi have a print when they told me they didnt i aint happy, i did notice when i type 'Hat Check Girl' into imdb that it comes up as 'Embassy Girl' so now wish i'd checked under both titles.

The following link has a publicity shot from the ski scene in 'HCG' as 'HCG' was apparantly the first film to show skiing!

What a great find, dirty-dancing-forever! I wonder if that's Ginger in the middle front! What a cool discovery. How tantalizing that you found a shot from this elusive film, and discovered that it was of historic importance as the first film to show skiing. I bet it's still extant somewhere ... and will surface in time. I think your decision to go ahead without it is the right one, brenel!

reply

i just wish could find a shot from the actual movie, but will keep looking. i've also emailed the UCLA library as according to the notes on the AFI page thats where AFI got the screen credits from and from what i understand they have at least a part of the script for 'HCG' so will let know if i manage to get a reply :-)

Edit: Already had a reply bless them, UCLA hold two different scripts for 'HCG' one dated July 28th 1932 and the other September 22nd 1932, sadly they dont seem to be viewable online :-(

VCI will be releasing a new DVD of this film on November 9th, 2010, titled "I'll Be Seeing You (Special Edition)". It'll also include the rare pilot episode of "The Ginger Rogers Show", which never materialized, and an interview with Ginger on Cinema Showcase. The retail price is $14.99, but it will probably discount to under $10. Details and artwork can be found at classicflix.com

thanks for sharing this information, be well worth waiting a few for more months for a few more minutes of 'i'll be seeing you' for what sounds like wonderful extras!

Just got another message from classicflix.com saying that the DVD release of "I'll Be Seeing You" has been postponed indefinitely, with no reason given. This is highly unusual. Sorry!

That's too bad,OP. I think TMC must take advantage of their acronym's unfortunate similarity to TCM. TCM is known for quality, TMC is not. Even as i was typing this I got them mixed up! I just watched the MGM version, which I got from Netflix. Wonderful film!
