Agreed. Shirley Temple struck all the right cords in her portrayal of a 17 yr old girl in 1944, who doesn't know what to make of her cousin visiting from prison. Her parents hadn't told her any details, so she was naturally suspicious.
She was great in the scene where Ginger Rogers explains why she's in prison and rightfully states she doesn't belong there.
She feels terribly guilty when lets the cat out of bag and I think the audience really feels for her. So in that respect alone, she's done her job as an actress.
I much prefer Shirley Temple in this than her "monkeys and rabbits, loop the loop" routines. But that is strictly my own opinion. I know she was beloved in those characters as a child star. It's just not my cup of tea.
