I'm confused????

Why is Peter Vadassy instructed by the police to make his room look like it has been ransacked? How would this make the 'spy' make a move? The police know it's Andre Roux anyway.

I'm confused too, because I assumed that Peter's room had been ransacked by the spy (then unknown to us)searching for the film. The police then instructed Peter to say that certain valuables had been stolen and to make as much fuss as possible - presumably in an attempt to flush out the villain.

Sorry to be so long in replying, but I've just caught the film on BBC2 and found it a reasonable way of whiling away 90 minutes on a wintry morning. I suspect that if I had recorded it and played it back, I would notice the plot creaking here and there, as do so many films when an innocent amateur is used by the police to uncover extreme villainry.

Just bizarre IMO. A complete amateur set up by the police, who end up admitting their "sins" and the victim appears to take a "that's OK, I understand" type attitude, and who even helps the cops out art the end, when the boss admits he would have let him hang, if necessary. 🐭
