Did I hear him wrong????

I'm watching this movie right now for the first time, and I'm at the part 50 minutes in where the mayor is writing his campaign speech. Did he just refer to himself as having "horny hands and an honest heart"? I really need to know what that meant in 1944 because I can't imagine the 2015 interpretation of that phrase making it past the censors.

Just watching this for this first time now and with CC on.
He said just what you heard. No idea what that would mean then.

reply

It meant then the hands of a laborer.

"What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence."

reply

It refers to hands that are hard and callused.
