"Not on my beat, sister"

The young runaway, Carol James, had fled to NY City, not knowing a soul in town. The beat cop sizes her up, and was about to say "Not on my beat, sister". The cop sees something in her her, and takes her home - but his wife won't have her over for more than a single night, and so takes her to the parish. She later says she has no funds, but "I'll get by [wink wink]".

So, was Carol planning on being a prostitute until she could find a sugardaddy?
