You love this film? Let me tell you, it is one of my all time favorites. I find it completely absorbing; it really draws you in.

When I first saw it in a theatre near Times Square, New York, back in the 50's, I liked it so much that I had to go back and see it again a day or so later.
I have also watched for it on television, and now have watched it on YouTube (unfortunately with distracting subtitles) and purchased a DVD of it.

Phyllis Calvert is also my favorite British actress, and I've seen her in many other films.

I just got finished watching Madonna of the Seven Moons on YouTube, another film I am familiar with that I have seen many times. And although the story as well as the acting is quite vivid, I feel that somehow it does not pull one in the same manner as Fanny by Gaslight, aside from being less cohesive all around in its presentation. The superior direction by Anthony Asquith of FbG may well have had something to do with it.

I feel that it got quite unfair treatment from the critics; and that it is much better than it is reputed to be. I for one never grow tired of it. I am also glad that you feel the same way as I do, and have posted an opinion to that effect.
