Joan eventually decides to join the army. She leans shorthand and is assigned as secretary to the now Major Gilbey!
She doesn't do her job very well and he yells at her and tells her she's fired. Joan finds Tom's anger and his being totally unapproachable as very stimulating, and she falls in love with him all over again.
They meet next at a dance at the house and express their love for each other.
In the final scene, Joan and Tom are leaving the house after having gotten married. Both are in their uniforms. Joan opens the car door for Tom, salutes, and tells him she will strive to meet his every expectation. He smiles, they get in the car, and drive away. The end.
