Phyllis appears at Walter's door and say he left this hat at her house.

He says to leave it on something (chair or desk maybe).

And I don't think you actually see the hat in the scene.

Since he clearly picked the hat up off the chair as he left, what do you make of that?

I make it out as they were just continuing their playful talking they way they were doing earlier in Phyllis's house. Just a different way of asking to come in I guess.

He dropped it before he exited the house, and didn't bother to pick it up.

No, he didn’t drop it. It was on his head when he left....
