Possibly a pointless one, but I was struck by a kind of biblical reference - when Oliver asks Amy three times in the garden if she can see Irena. Except in this case, unlike Peter (? - am not sure which apostle it was) she didn't deny her friend, but was faithful to her. But as i say, not quite sure what this would mean, if it was intended...

It was Peter who denied knowing Christ 3 times.

But as far as the movie sequence being a biblical reference, I doubt it.

Frequently, something is done in threes because it just makes for good dramatic timing. I think that's the case here.
