the songs

In this movie are awful. Not a memorable one in the bunch. They sound like they were written for a Broadway musical from about 1910. Everyone mentions Long Ago and Far Away which one was that again?... give me Singing in the Rain instead.

Well, since Singin' in the Rain is regarded as possibly the best musical of all time, that request would be understandable.

I agree the soundtrack to Cover Girl does not match Singin' in the Rain WITH the exception of Long Ago and Far Away which is a beautiful standard that stacks up to most from that period. If you need directions where to find it you must have slept through the film. A coupe of numbers DO sound dated as you say. But Make Way For Tomorrow and Put Me to the Test are fun numbers and even more enjoyable to watch. Kelly's Mirror dance is also a gem.

Where Singin had the trio of Kelly, O'Conner and Reynolds, with Reynolds being the weak link dancer (trust me, its not that weak), CG relies on Kelly & Hayworth (who can keep up with ANY male dancer, she is brilliant). Silver may funny, but he's no singer/dancer. And Kelly and Hayworth DO INDEED make this film. They have nice chemistry, dance their socks off and make this a wonderfully enjoyable picture.

It is NOT Singin' in the Rain, but few pictures are. maybe give it another try in the future.

Another song, whose loveliness isn't readily apparent from the unimaginative arrangement it gets in the film, is the scarcely-remembered, little-covered and generally neglected Sure Thing.

To discover this song's fully realized potential, check out Diane Schuur's early '80s rendition:

A very good song, I find myself returning to it often.

Singing in the rain was released Almost a decade after cover girl. So, of course, there is a mark different between the two films. Also cover girl had flashbacks to music of the early 1900's.

But almost all the music is old songs from 20s, 30s & 40s.

Anyway, Long Ago and Far Away from Cover Girl is one of the greatest songs ever written. There are some fun tunes in Singin in the Rain but nothing of that caliber.

I'm surprised how many people don't like the songs in this movie. To be quite frank, singing in the rain might be a better produced movie, but as another poster pointed out, most of the songs weren't written especially for the film anyway – and I don't like them as much as I like some of the songs in COVER GIRL.

I will admit that parts of COVER GIRL bored me. But, I still think I like it a little better than singing in the rain. Or perhaps it's just that I'm so familiar with singing in the rain now, it doesn't hold the same sparkle of excitement or enjoyment for me anymore. In any case, I think I would rather watch COVER GIRL again then the latter. That being said, they are both good movies.

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

This is an awful film, not the least for it's music, but for many reasons. But comparing it to "Singing in the Rain," is just plain stupid. What's the point? If you go to an art gallery do you compare everything to the Sistine Chapel? Or, when you read a novel do you think, "Hell, this is not the Brothers Karamazov."
