French DVD released April 2007

A PAL Region 2 DVD was released in France in April 2007. As best I can tell, it appears to have been transferred from an unrestored high-quality original Technicolor print; I was very impressed with the picture quality. The DVD includes the original film with optional French subtitles, and also a version with French-language dubbing which is accessed directly from the main menu. There is a short documentary focusing on director Siodmak; it is entirely in French with no subtitles. An original trailer is also included, which again has surprisingly high image-quality.

But sadly, in the USA, Universal is sitting on most of their old classics, as well as the Paramount library, which they acquired through MCA. There is a horrible shortage of Universal and Paramount movies from the Golden Age available on DVD, apparently because Universal doesn't think that it's cost effective to release them. It's a damn shame!

And companies like Universal wonder why people use cyberlockers and torrents to obtain these things...
