Cary Grant looking directly at the camera

Was this an old-fashioned movie thing? It really catches you off-guard when you first see it. 

Every time Miss Voodoo is asleep Shelly walks hard as *beep* and it wakes her up.

Cary Grant admited that his scenery chewing in this film was excessive.

It was terrible, one of the beyond-over-the-top things that spoiled this movie. Capra should have dialed everything, especially Grant, back from 11 to about 6 or 7, and it would have been a lot better. Grant was embarrassed by the overacting Capra wanted, and asked to re-shoot some of his scenes so he could tone it down, but he never got the chance. For the rest of his life he said it was his least favorite of his performances.
