Bette was right

Max Steiner's music was sometimes too loud and overbearing in this era of Warner films. It was laughable at times with the music so loud the dialogue could not heard or was made to sound cheesy.

I noticed that as well. In the era of the melodrama, sometimes too much emphasis was placed on the melo part and not enough on the drama part. I do, however, much prefer the sounds of movies of the past over the ones of today with their overuse of god-awful hiphop.
