Someone said Lillian Hellman wrote a sequel in which we learn whether Kurt survived, but this never became a movie. WHAT do YOU think his fate would have been?? There is an indication at the end that his son might join the army--wouldn't it be lovely if he saved his own father.
I think the boy would have joined the Military, and would have found his father...in the Camps. He would also have survived to tell his father's STORY at the NUREMBURG TRIALS.
The family never knows anything, other than that the eldest boy had gone into the Military. They only find out when they see the young man in the Newsreels: The Grandson of a former U.S. Senator, and the Son of a German Patriot, speaking for those who no longer can.
I don't know how Lillian would have done things, but it's what I would have done. To have the son Bear Witness.
