Who Was The David Farrelly / Brother Character?

In the IMDB synopsis it says:

A German-born engineer, his American wife and their children travel from Mexico to the United States to visit his brother but their plans are complicated by a Romanian count.

That is Paul as Kurt, Bette as Sara, (skip the children), George as Teck the count based on that synopsis.

Later we learn that Fanny Farrelly is Sara's mother and I guess David Farrelly is Sara's brother. But I don't remember anyone saying it. But Fanny's house guest Geraldine as Marthe who is married to Teck the count, seems to have a major interest in David. They are shown together socializing but not overtly romantic.

But who is Kurt's brother they are coming to see as stated in the synopsis? Is it the Max who was captured as read aloud by the count from the newspaper?

Kurt is really someone else and the count has him pegged by his and wife and kids description. Earlier the count said he thought Kurt was really Max when he read from the paper. Then Kurt kills him for knowing his true identity and the black mail attempt not to snitch him out.

I did not find any more information on David in the reviews section either so I guess he is just more character fodder or may be considered part of a sub plot for the Marthe character.

Thanks to other posters who explained the title metaphor via the German song title "Die Wacht am Rhine". I had expected some kind of spy scenes from some where on the river but it never happened. I rated it a 7/10 with points taken off for the character obfuscation.

If I understand your question correctly, this is simply a case where the imdb synopsis was careless (as it often is). It should say "to visit HER brother" (or "to visit his brother-in-law"). There are brief hints at one point that Kurt is traveling under an assumed identity, but Teck's clumsy blackmail attempt is not about Kurt's identity but about revealing his relationship with Max, his friend in Germany (the near-impossibility of rescuing Max single-handedly would be made totally impossible if the Germans knew about Kurt and his plans).

OK, thanks phelpsg1 for pointing out that the synopsis/storyline as written on imdb is incorrect. Based on that incorrectness I was thing that Max and Kurt were brothers and the visit was a decoy to lead enemy spies to think that Max was in the USA as opposed to being in Germany doing whatever he was actually up to.
